20 Countries at 20 – Twenty Lessons Learned – Part 1

As someone who’s had the chance to explore 20 countries by the age of 20, my travels have been a journey of personal growth, cultural immersion, and valuable life lessons. Whether it was navigating unfamiliar streets, finding halal food, or simply observing local customs, each country has shaped my perspective in meaningful ways. Here are the first 10 lessons I’ve learned from some of the most impactful places I’ve visited.

1. Uzbekistan: Tradition and Generosity at Its Core

Uzbekistan, with its rich history and ancient Silk Road cities, introduced me to a deep sense of tradition. From the intricate turquoise architecture in Khiva to the bustling markets of Bukhara, I learned how strongly tradition shapes identity. What stood out most was the hospitality of the Uzbek people. Despite language barriers, I was welcomed with warm tea and open arms, a reminder that generosity speaks louder than words. This country taught me that genuine connection can overcome any cultural or linguistic divide.

2. Australia (Perth): The Beauty of Simplicity and Nature

Perth, though quieter compared to Australia’s bustling cities, is surrounded by natural beauty. What I learned here is the value of simplicity—life doesn’t always need to be fast-paced to be fulfilling. Finding halal food was relatively easy in the city’s multicultural setting, but outside the city, it became trickier. This taught me the importance of preparation and being adaptable when exploring areas where resources may not always be readily available. Perth was a reminder to appreciate both the simple pleasures of nature and the ease of city living.

3. Japan: Respect and Precision in Every Aspect

Japan’s culture revolves around respect—whether it’s bowing, orderly train systems, or the quiet politeness of the people. Despite the language barrier, I felt a sense of unity and respect wherever I went. While finding halal food required a bit more research, the kindness of locals made up for it as they eagerly helped me navigate my way through their country. Japan taught me that small acts of courtesy and respect can leave a lasting impact, and that precision and order can create a smoother, more fulfilling experience.

4. The Maldives: The Art of Disconnecting

The Maldives, with its crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches, offered a peaceful retreat from the chaos of everyday life. Being there, I learned the importance of disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with nature. The simplicity of island life showed me that luxury isn’t just in grand hotels or expensive meals; it’s in the stillness, in listening to the waves, and in appreciating the present. This place reminded me that true peace often comes when you step away from the noise and appreciate life’s simpler pleasures.

5. The UK: The Power of Diversity

London is a melting pot of cultures, and this diversity was one of the most striking aspects of my visit. Whether I was exploring different neighborhoods or trying various cuisines (including halal!), the coexistence of so many cultures in one place was inspiring. It showed me how different backgrounds and traditions can come together to create a vibrant, inclusive community. The UK taught me the importance of embracing diversity not only in others but also in myself, as it broadens our understanding of the world.

6. The US (Houston, Orlando, Baltimore): The Value of Community

During my time in the US, particularly in cities like Houston, Orlando, and Baltimore, I was struck by the sense of community I encountered. Houston’s Muslim community, in particular, made it easy to find halal food and a welcoming environment, which was a comforting reminder of home despite being miles away. Orlando’s tourist-centered vibe and Baltimore’s historic charm showed me that despite different settings, the value of community remains constant. The US taught me that finding your “people,” even in unfamiliar places, can make any destination feel like home.

7. Saudi Arabia: Spiritual Fulfillment Beyond Words

My journey to Makkah and Medina was not just a physical trip, but a spiritual awakening. Standing in front of the Kaaba, surrounded by thousands of people from all over the world, I felt a sense of peace and belonging that’s hard to describe. Saudi Arabia taught me that faith is a unifying force, one that brings together people of different backgrounds with a shared sense of purpose. The experience of Umrah reaffirmed my belief in the importance of spiritual reflection and inner peace.

8. UAE: Balancing Tradition and Modernity

The UAE, especially Dubai, is a fascinating blend of futuristic skyscrapers and traditional values. What I observed here was the delicate balance between embracing innovation and holding on to cultural heritage. Despite its rapid development, the country remains deeply connected to its traditions, especially regarding hospitality and respect for others. Finding halal food was never a challenge, but beyond that, the UAE showed me that progress doesn’t have to come at the expense of tradition—it’s about finding harmony between the two.

9. France: The Beauty of Taking Your Time

France, particularly Paris, taught me the art of slowing down. Whether it was leisurely sipping coffee at a café or enjoying a long dinner with friends, I learned that life doesn’t have to be rushed. This wasn’t just about food or drink; it was about appreciating moments as they happen. In a world that often feels like it’s moving too fast, France reminded me that it’s okay to pause, breathe, and take in the beauty around you. It’s a lesson that goes beyond travel—it’s about living with intention.

10. Germany: Precision and Structure as a Way of Life

Germany’s efficiency and organization were evident in every aspect of my visit, from the well-timed public transportation to the meticulous city planning. It was here that I learned the value of structure and how it contributes to a peaceful, well-functioning society. Traveling through Germany showed me that while spontaneity has its place, there’s also a sense of calm that comes from having things run smoothly and on time. This lesson translated into my own life, where I’ve come to appreciate the balance between planning and going with the flow.

These 10 lessons are just a glimpse of what traveling to 20 countries has taught me. Each place has shaped me in different ways, offering insights into culture, life, and personal growth. Stay tuned for Part 2, where I’ll share more lessons from the other countries that have made an impact on my journey.
