Traveling has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my life, and by the age of 20, I’ve been lucky enough to experience 19 countries. From 2004 to 2024, my travels took me across continents, uncovering unforgettable moments, cultures, and adventures. Hopefully by my next birthday I’d have travelled to one more to complete the number! Perhaps a solo female trip. Here’s what amazed me the most at each destination, and what still remains fresh in my memory.
1. Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan blew me away with its rich history and vibrant culture. From the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva to the incredible Islamic architecture, every corner felt like stepping back in time. But what truly impressed me was how multilingual everyone was—most people I met spoke at least three languages fluently, a reflection of the country’s diverse heritage and global influence.
2. United Arab Emirates (UAE)
The UAE, especially Dubai, was a place where modernity meets tradition. What amazed me the most was how safe it was to walk around at night, even as a woman. Coming from a country that was just a desert 100 years ago, it’s impressive how quickly the Emirates have developed into a futuristic cityscape. Hats off to the Emiratis for building such a marvel in the middle of the desert.
3. Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is all about scale. Everything felt bigger—the roads, the malls, the cars, even the designer handbags (Birkins everywhere!). The opulence of the country made it feel like the Middle East’s version of the US, just with an Arab twist. The big hotels, grand mosques, and even the sprawling cities left a lasting impression.
4. Japan
Japan’s commitment to social values is something the world can learn from. Everything is punctual, clean, and incredibly organized. The politeness of the people stood out, and the absence of racism or fear of scams made Japan one of the most stress-free travel destinations. In tourist areas, I felt completely safe, and every experience was so convenient—it felt like a utopia.
5. Maldives
No words are enough to capture the beauty of the Maldives. The water is pure magic, and the nature is simply breathtaking. I had the incredible experience of swimming with sharks and dolphins in the clearest, bluest waters I’ve ever seen. It’s truly one of those places where you feel like you’re living in a dream.
6. Australia
Australia, especially in March, offers the best weather. I was struck by how relaxed everything felt. The shops close at 5 or even 4 sometimes, giving the country a small-town vibe. While koalas and kangaroos were cool, I think wombats deserve more love—these adorable creatures are massive! Visiting the Pinnacles was also a highlight, showcasing Australia’s unique natural beauty.
7. Turkiye
For a history lover like me, Turkey was a dream come true. The architecture is simply out of this world, blending the ancient with the modern. Walking through places like Istanbul was like walking through centuries of history. But let me set the record straight—Turkish delight is overrated! Whatever Narnia showed you, forget it. Stick to sour candy, trust me.
8. Indonesia
In Bandung and Surabaya, I found a shopper’s paradise. Traditional clothing like batik and kebaya were everywhere, and the prices were unbeatable. And the food—don’t get me started. Indonesian sambal is on another level, and bakso (a type of meatball soup) quickly became a family favorite. Shopping and eating here was a total joy!
9. Singapore
Singapore is like Malaysia’s polished cousin—cleaner, more efficient, but familiar. The public transport system is top-notch, and while the food scene is good, it doesn’t quite beat Malaysia’s. Singapore bihun was a pleasant surprise though! The city felt like a home away from home, but with better city planning and infrastructure.
10. United Kingdom
Having grown up in the UK, I might be a little biased, but it will always feel like home. There’s a cozy, warm vibe that’s hard to beat. Instead of the usual tourist spots, I recommend visiting places like Tenby, Brecon in winter, Cornwall, Blackpool, and Brighton during summer. These spots capture the UK’s charm away from the hustle and bustle.
11. United States
The US, particularly Disney World, was a childhood dream come true. Visiting four parks was an unforgettable experience, with Magic Kingdom being just the beginning. The Children’s Museum in Houston was great for kids, and for space enthusiasts like me, the NASA Museum was a highlight. Also, do yourself a favour and try the extreme version of the space-themed ride at Disney—it’s a must.
12. France
France was a bit of a mixed bag. I had fun at a summer camp, but encountered a lot of casual racism. Paris, while iconic, was a bit underwhelming, but the deals at the stores were fantastic. One food tip: avoid pistachio ice cream. It wasn’t what I expected, and I’m still recovering from the taste.
13. Switzerland
If Earth has places like Switzerland, I can’t even imagine what heaven looks like. The country is breathtaking, even in the summer, and I can only imagine how stunning it must be in winter. Every view felt like a postcard, and the peaceful atmosphere made me never want to leave.
14. Germany
Germany felt like any other European city, but the Mercedes Benz Museum was definitely a highlight. The precision and innovation that the country is known for were on full display. It was a cool glimpse into the world of engineering and automotive history.
15. Belgium
Belgium was a pleasant stop during a European tour. The Atomium was a unique landmark, and the chocolate factory tour was a must for any chocoholic. While the city was nice, it didn’t stand out too much from other European destinations, but it had a certain charm.
16. Netherlands
I spent a summer in the Netherlands at Duinrell, a holiday camp next to a water park. It was one of the most fun vacations ever, with a mix of relaxation and adventure. The country’s beautiful landscapes and laid-back vibe made it a perfect summer getaway.
17. Spain
Spain was a dream for an architecture and history lover like me. Places like Cordoba, Granada, and Seville were rich with cultural heritage, and the Costa del Sol, Marbella, and Gibraltar offered a fun, sun-soaked road trip. If you ever visit, rent a car and explore as many cities as possible—it’s worth it.
18. Italy
Italy is every bit as magical as people say. From Venice to Rome to Pisa, the iconic landmarks were even more impressive in person. What really stood out for me though were the masquerade masks sold near tourist areas. I bought one a decade ago, and it’s still in perfect condition—a lovely reminder of Italy’s charm.
19. Malaysia
And finally, my home country, Malaysia. We’ve explored most of the country, with Semporna being a standout destination—it truly lives up to its reputation as a mini Maldives. If I had to pick a favorite place to live, it would be still be Selangor or Kuala Lumpur, although Melaka comes in close. Malaysia is diverse, vibrant, and will always hold a special place in my heart.
I need to go to one more country by my next birthday to say that I’ve been to 20 countries at 20! It has been an incredible journey so far, with each destination offering something unique and unforgettable. I’m excited to see where the next country will take me!
